Message from Mr. Kodama of the Iwate Rail Modelers' Circle on the Sister Club Agreement

Dear JASWDC, members of JRM, and people of America,

We are a railroad modeling club based in Iwate Prefecture, named "Iwate Tetsudou Mokei Nakama no Kai (Iwate Rail Modelers' Circle)". Iwate is about 500 km (300 miles) north of Tokyo, on the Pacific coast of Japan. It's at the same latitude as Washington, DC. It's a region where nature is abundant.

We have big news for everyone. On April 25, our club will join with Japan Rail Modelers of Washington, DC, in a sister club agreement. The year before last, JRM member Matthew Davis came to live in Iwate and joined our club. Unfortunately, he must return to the U.S. in May. We are saddened by this, but by signing this agreement we can continue and deepen our friendship with our fellow fans of Japanese railroads despite the distance.

As we participate in model railroad events throughout the year, we will be introducing JRM to our visitors. Likewise, JRM will introduce us to the people of America.

On another note, a new "Shinkansen" (bullet train) will soon begin operating in Japan. This train is to be called "Sakura" -- named after the cherry blossoms you are all enjoying in Washington now. A model of the "Sakura" bullet train will probably be released soon; when it is, you'll be able to see it in Washington, thanks to JRM.

Although we have differences of language and culture, we look forward to building our friendly relations through our common interest in model railroading.

親愛なる、アメリカ国民の皆様、ＪＲＭのメンバーの皆様。そして、ワシントンＤＣ日米協会の皆様。

私たちは、日本の岩手県で活動している「岩手鉄道模型仲間の会」という、鉄道模型ファンのサークルです。岩手県は、東京の北、約５００キロの太平洋側にあります。ちょうど、ワシントンＤＣと同じ緯度の場所にあります。とても、自然が豊かな地域です。

私たちは、皆様に大きなニュースをお伝えします。４月２５日に、私たちのサークルと、ワシントンの鉄道模型サークル「ＪＲＭ」とが、姉妹クラブ協定を締結することとなりました。実は、ＪＲＭのマシュー・デイビスさんが、一昨年から岩手県に住んでおり、私たちのサークルの会員として活動しています。しかし、彼は５月にアメリカに戻ります。とても残念なことですが、遠く離れていても日本の鉄道が大好きな仲間として、交流し続けたいと思い協定を締結することにしました。

私たちは、年に何回か鉄道模型を展示していますが、その会場でＪＲＭの活動を紹介します。逆に、ＪＲＭの展示会で私たちのことを紹介してくれる予定です。

さて、日本ではまもなく新しい「新幹線」が誕生します。その新幹線のニックネームは「さくら」と名付けられます。そう、皆さんが今ワシントンで目にしている桜（ＳＡＫＵＲＡ）と同じ名前です。この新幹線「さくら」号の模型も、きっと製造され、ＪＲＭの皆さんを通じて皆様の前で紹介されることでしょう。

私たちは、言葉や文化の違いはありますが、鉄道模型という共通の趣味を通じて、これからも友好関係を築いていきたいと思っています。
