Trains of Japan - A Photo Essay By Bob Tomasko - Revised, Updated and Expanded!
Japan is a railfan’s heaven – especially if you like electrically propelled passenger trains. You name it, and (except for mile-long freights) they have it. JRM member Bob Tomasko took the photos that follow during trips to Japan in 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2007. They illustrate the broad range of equipment you are likely to see on a visit.

  • Shinkansens (bullet trains) in a variety of styles
  • Limited express intercity train sets (EMU and DMU)
  • Container freights and a (static display of a) steam locomotive
  • Airport-to-city express shuttles
  • Urban local commuter rakes
  • Trams, LRVs and mountain railways
  • Cable cars and monorails

Timonium Train Show May, 2006
Our most recent show at Timonium. There will be a break over the summer as the there is not enough room for layouts in the air conditioned exhibit hall they use for the summer show. We will be back at Timonium in October!

World's Greatest Hobby Train Show February, 2006
The WGH show came to Dullas Expo center in Northern Virginia. We were accepted to display at the show and given a great spot front and center in the exhibit hall! We had a lot of great feedback by the visitors who were mostly families about the uniqueness of our layout. This show also saw the debut of our video wall in one of our high rise buildings. This was created by using a small digital personal video recorder mounted inside the building.

Timonium Train Show February, 2006
Our sixth train show and our fifth at Timonium so we are now old hats at doing this show!

Rockville Lions Club Train Show November, 2005
This is a wonderful local train show put on every year by the Rockville Lions Club. The show is for layouts only and is attended mainly by local families. Definitely the most fun show we have done! We look forward to attending the show in 2006.

Timonium Train Show October, 2005
Our fourth show and we are getting faster at the setup! Unfortunately, we were in a larger, but darker, area in the corner of the vendor room.

Timonium Train Show April 16th & 17th, 2005
This was our third show. Unfortunately we were missing some of our members, track, and buildings so our set up wasn't as slick as the previous shows. None the less we had a lot of folks who really enjoyed the exhibit and a few new possible members found us! One of our reasons for doing the layout was to possibly find the other Japanese rail fans in the area and it looks like there are more!

Gif Animation of our setup at the April Timonium Show
A fun gif animation of our set up a the Timonium show. It should give you an idea of how we do it! (1.5MB Gif Animation)

Our newest Member, Dmitry, shot a series of Pictures of the Layout Setup.

Timonium Show February 5th & 6th, 2005
This was our second show. We are getting faster at our setup and breakdowns now. Lots of fun and lots of interest at the show.

New Layout Plans with a Single Local Line
Since we lost some of our donated track to members' layouts, we had to simplify our local lines into a single local line. The upside to this is that we were able to add more sidings and passing tracks to the local level to enhance our local level operations.

Timonium Show October 9th & 10th, 2004
Our first showing of the layout. Lots of kinks to work out, but for the most part a smashing success with only the occasional derailment!

Buildings Placed October, 2004
We had a fast building placement session to arrange our available buildings in a 'suggestive' arrangement of Japanese cityscapes.

Storage Yard added September, 2004
We have an 8'x2' yard coming off the viaduct level tracks with 12 storage tracks. One big enough to handle a full 16 car shinkansen!

The fri st track set up September, 2004
This was our first track installation. We made a few modifications on our original plans. We moved the outer loop passing track out to allow a transfer station between the two lines. Also tried moving the switch on the container yard around the corner to make two long spurs for container trains.

The Original Track Plans
We have finalized our first track plan. Double viaduct track with a mega viaduct station and a smaller viaduct station. We have two local lines, the inner and the outer, that each have double loops with crossovers. There are also three tram lines that will be run with reversing circuits.

Planning Stages
Our first planning meeting in August 2004 to layout the viaduct and ground level tracks. The Layout is built on 2'x4' modules that are constructed from 1"x4"s and 1" thick foam insulation board for the top surface. These are bolted together and set up on saw horses. The hope is we can change our layout shape by just bolting the modules together in different formations and adding modules if needed.
