| A-019 Track crossing gates at JR East Kita-Kamakura station of the Yokosuka line. The steps past the gates lead up to the Engaky-ji Zen Buddhist temple. Temple compounds are frequently entered by crossing a bridge over a pond or stream (in foreground of photo), symbolizing the crossing from an earthly world to that of Buddha. This is one of the few temples where railway tracks also serve as a symbolic boundary to be crossed by temple visitors. Mar. 2003. |
